Is Champions League quality
under threat with the new amendment and historic records based teams really the
answer for the modern football?
The top four teams from top
four leagues are all set to automatically qualify for each of the group stage
of the Champions League from 2018/19, according to the sources.
It has been tough
negotiations going on recently for the past six months between stakeholders,
including the clubs who threatened to boycott the Champions League, if their
demands are not met. Because of that
UEFA committee is expected to approve this decision which effects the whole
football dynamics.
They also gave a thread of launching European Super League if
their demands will not met. According to this, it is actually based on historic
merit, which means a “parachute” for popular clubs who fail to qualify for the
big stage and also to increase broadcast audiences.
Countries benefited from
this new structure are England, Spain, Germany and Italy. This will give the
chance to the top four leagues five more guareenteed teams. Leagues from
France
and Russia, who are currently at six respectively, can move into the top four
based on their clubs’ performances in European competition.
If I would say, this thing
should not be approved if they want to see quality and competition in football.
This step is taken because of the fact that small teams are going to win titles
by their mere performances. Recent example is English club Leicester City who
surprised everyone to win the Premier League.
