Spanish Dominance in UEFA Super Cup

Its looks like more of a Spanish Super Cup than UEFA Super Cup as the Spanish sides recently dominating in this one match final that is played between the winners of both the Champions League and the Europa League. Dutch journalist Anton Witkamp in 1972 proposed the idea of creating a European competition between the winners of Champions Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup, which would decide the ‘Champion of Champions’, the best team in Europe.

The first final was played in 1972 between Ajax and Rangers which Ajax won by 6-3. Since the revolutionary trophy proved itself a complete success among the media and football fans so UEFA decided to take up this competition and organize it officially. Since then the final is played between the winners of Champions league and the Europa league winner on a regular basis. It is the third successive year in a row that the final is going to play between the two Spanish sides, Real Madrid against Sevilla on 9th of August at Norway.

The 2015 final was played between Barcelona and Sevilla which ended in Barca’s favor beating Sevilla by 5-4 on extra time.

2014 UEFA Super Cup final was played between the same this year’s finalist Real Madrid against Sevilla, which Madrid won by 2-0 at Cardiff. Sevilla become the first team in the history to play in 3rd consecutive prestigious UEFA Super Cup final after winning UEFA Europa League for the third time in a row beating Liverpool 3-1 at Basel. Although they were beaten in the previous two consecutive meetings against Barcelona and Real Madrid and surely they will try everything to win this upcoming final to not let them lose third final in a row.

Spanish sides were also dominating the UEFA Super Cup final by winning the last 6 of the 7 finals. The Spanish clubs are dominating the UEFA Super Cup because of the fact that the top clubs in Spain not only focusing on the league but also on the Champions League and the Europa League and they have the clubs who have the credentials to win the league as well as one of the other these two trophies so that they compete in the UEFA Super Cup final. Italian club AC Milan and the Spanish club Barcelona are the most successful clubs winning 5 times. 5 Spanish sides won the Super Cup combining 12 trophies in the Spanish Clubs trophy cabinet. Italy is second with 9 trophies. Tuesday's match will prove to be an exciting encounter.

Real Madrid has a good head-to-head record against Sevilla having won 30 out of 45 meetings between the two with three draws. Madrid will be without Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and goalkeeper Keylor Navas but they will surely miss Ronaldo over the other two.

Los Rajiblancos were outstanding in last season's cup competitions, reaching the final of the Copa Del Rey final and winning a third consecutive Europa Cup. The club have appointed Jorge Sampaoli on a two year contract, who is a proven winner having led Chile to the 2015 Copa America Title.
