Reigning Champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round of 2016 U.S. open after Mikhail Youzhny retired midway through the first set.
Youzhny was clearly in distress, lacking the necessary movement to remain competitive against the world No.1. He tried to fight through the pain before opting to quit after just six games.
Djokovic also benefited from Jiri Vesely's withdrawal, which allowed him to move through the second round without hitting a shot. Ultimately, the situation could become a blessing or curse for the Serbian. While he doesn't mind the additional opportunities to rest his wrist, at some point rust will enter the equation, given the lack of match play this week.
Djokovic will now face Britain Kyle Edmund in the fourth round, who beats world No.20 John Isner 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(7-5) in two hours and forty three minutes.
Rafael Nadal's summer resurgence continued as he entered the forth round of 2016 U.S Open by beating Andrey Kuznetsov 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
Nadal still has a long way to go before he can think about winning the U.S Open, but the results has been promising so fr with three consecutive straight-set wins.
It only needed 29 minutes and one dropped game for Nadal to win the first set in the 3rd round. The second set was a bit challenging for Nadal as his first-serve percentage dropped to 50 with five double-faults, but he was able to get away with it.
Nadal didn't waste more time as he ended the match with 6-2 win in the third set to put Kuznetsov away. This win puts Nadal in the tournament's second week for the first time in three years.
Nadal last time won the U.S Open back in 2013 when he defeated Novak Djokovic in four sets and he was hoping to do the same.
