Yesterday was the historic
day for the Sri Lanka’s cricketing history as they beat current world number 1
test side Australia by 106 runs in the first test at Pallekele. It was Sri Lanka’s
first win in tests against Australia since 1999 when Sanath Jayasuriya’s side
were victorious against the mighty Aussies at Candy. Yesterday’s defeat was
Australia’s seventh consecutive test match loss in Asia, in which they lost 4
against India, 2 against Pakistan and now against the new look Sri Lanka who
were for the past 1 year were struggling to make a big impression in the world
cricket especially after the departure of Kumar Sangakara and Mahela
Jayawardene.
Sri Lanka were down and out in the 1st test when they
were bowled out for just 117 runs in the first innings and in the 2nd
innings they were two wickets down for just 6 runs on th board and it looks like they even could
not reach 80 runs mark to equals Australia lead and can suffer a humiliating
loss.
But then came Mendis at four and he turned the match on his head. He
scored a superb hundred and scored 176 runs which goes down as one of the
finest test innings for Sri Lanka. Australia could not be able to score 268 as
they bowled out to just 161 in the final day of the test match.
At one time it
looks like the match will go for a draw with the way Aussie tail enders were
defended and the looming threat of bad light but it was Herath who outsmart the
Aussies with his master spin bowling and end the match with 9 wickets. Angelo
Mathews is now join Sanath Jayasuriya as the only Sri Lankan captain to beat
Australia in a test match. That victory will prove to be vital for the Sri
Lanka’s cricket revival and it will help them to achieve big things in the
future.
