La Liga Giants Title Credentials

The race is about to start for the brand new trophy between the giants of Spain as the new season of LIGA BBVA gets underway this weekend. Last season ends up as Barcelona won the La Liga title in an extraordinary scenario for the title race and this season also promises to be another fascinating title race.

Let’s evaluate top three title contenders' prospects for the 2016/17 season.

Barcelona:
Champions Barcelona kick start their new season on Saturday against Real Betis at home. They are a very strong outfit having Messi, Suarez and Neymar up front having scored 90 goals combined in La Liga last term and remain the deadliest front pair in world football.

They also have depth in the squad too with the new arrivals who can add extra stability in their department. Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne both signed in this summer to cover up the defense and add more depth and quality in the defensive area.

Andre Gomes from Valencia and Denis Suarez from Villarreal also the new two latest additions in the Barca squad for bolstering the midfield.

Their main weekness could haunt them in this season as they overly relied on ‘MSN’ and they don’t have any reliable cover on the bench. MSN’s dip in form or injury could be a concern for them as they strengthened other departments but not on the attacking area.

Real Madrid:
Real Madrid will travel to Real Sociedad in their opening match which will be played on Sunday 21.

A single point separated Real from Catalans as they came out second best in the title race. The Frenchman Zidane knows how to get the best out of Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo and this time Zidane had the full summer to prepare in their chase for the title bid. The arrival of Morata from Juventus also add depth in the squad and gives them exciting options.

On the other side, Zidane is relatively inexperienced, although he won Champions League within four months into his first job but still has some unknown qualtity in the dugout that will test them to how far they can go.

Atletico Madrid:

Simone’s side will take on newly promoted Alaves on Sunday to start their new season.

They had a fantastic last season having been in the title race for the last weekend of the season and also unfortunately lost against Real Madrid in the Champions League final which was somewhat quite an achievement for Atletico for reaching in their 2nd final in three years.

They have a very good squad with some new faces with the likes of Nico Gaitan, Sime Vrsaljko and Kevin Gameiro who can add depth and a challenge for the rivals for the title race.

But the most important thing for them is they have Simone, who is the mastermind for their La Liga triumph in 2013/14 season. They also have a star Frenchman Griezmann, who will lead the attacking line and a mighty defense who conceded on 18 goals in 38 games.

But they still are underdogs going into the season as Barcelona and Real Madrid are the top contenders. No doubt they have the utmost quality but they have to work hard to prove they can repeat 2013/14 season.
