Pep Guardiola start his
Manchester City career with a narrow 2-1 win over Sunderland, thanks to
debutant Paddy McNair’s own goal in the 87th minute, in the opening
weekend of the 2016/17 Premier league season.
Sergio Aguero’s 4th
minute penalty was cancelled out by Jermain Defoe in the 71st minute
after Paddy McNair scored an own goal, just before the end of the match.
Guardiola
made some changes to the Citizens’ XI for his first match in charge, starting
with Willy Caballero over Joe Hart and Aleksander Kolarov at center-back
alongside new signing John Stones.
Much of Saturday’s attention was always
bound to surround how how tactical mastermind Guardiola shaped his city side,
and the Mirror’s Alex Richards gave some insight as to how they were operating:
“Shape-wise, Pep’s City are
similar to his Bayern. Fullbacks tucking in, wingers high and wide, two men
hitting the box behind Aguero”.
Sunderland manager David
Moyes was impressed with his side’s display but says they are “short in several
areas”.
